it with great sadness that we must let the McCarthy family know that John (Brian) Turnbull passed away suddenly at his home in Calgary, Alberta on May 4th, 2010.
He was second son of Bertha McCarthy and John Turnbull. Brother to Gordon, Harvard and Teresa.
Father to Chris (Joan), Pauline (David) and Pat (Dez). Grandfather to Andrew, Miranda (Richard), Rebecca (Jacen) and Daniel.
Brian was an avid sportsman who loved fishing Rice Lake in Keene for the next big Muskie, watching and umpiring baseball and watching and refereeing ice hockey.
He had many personal highlights in his career as an official and was never lacking for stories from the rink or the diamond. From the player who made it to the pro’s to the funny thing that happened in the stands that night.
Brian will be sorely missed by his family and friends. He once spoke of wishing he could travel back to the next McCarthy family reunion.
Notes of condolences can be sent to christurnbull@shaw.ca
Best Wishes and Love to all,
Chris Turnbull

It is sad news that I am passing along today. Joe McCarthy past away earlier today in Peterborough at the age of 86. He was the last sibling of (my Mom) Loretta Bolin’s. Arrangements are still pending and I will post that information when I get it.
The information regarding Joe McCarthy’s funeral is as follows:
Friday, October 8, 2010 at St. John’s in Keene
Visitation from 10:00 to 11:00, funeral mass to take place after visitation.
Flowers or donations (I believe) can be dealt with through Duffus’ funeral home if you wish to do so. ( Duffus Funeral Home 705-745-4612).
I believe they are trying to get the parish hall in Asumption to hold a reception afterward but I’m not sure if this is confirmed yet. I will post a message when all is definitely confirmed as things have been known to change. Please come back and check the website later in the week for any more information.
Take Care all
Sue Bolin-Clark

Coming to the end of 2010 I look back and am reminded of Joe McCarthy’s passing last October. In death, Joe brought almost all of his 30 nieces and nephews together on a beautiful warm sunny day in Keene. The church was full of cousins. Looking around I noticed that we all had become the aunts and uncles we used to see each Sunday in the church pews. At the graveyard after Joe’s burial we fanned out and saw the many tombstones of the generations that have gone before. The wonderful church hall reception followed by a lovely get-together at Bolin’s farm allowed us all to get caught up on how much our lives have changed. Thanks Joe for bringing us all together in celebration of the memories that we all share.
Speaking of memories, I think back to the summer of 1959, when I am a 7 year old boy hanging on to the side of the tractor that Joe is driving. I think this is so cool! Then some 6 years later in 1965 I am helping Joe at milking time. I get the cows from the swamp and he puts the milking machines on them. I remember as a university student in the mid 1970s, visiting the farm and watching Joe win his share of bridge games. Over the years I would visit Joe from time to time to chat about the political events of the day. I remember having a lengthy conversation with Joe about selling the farm in the summer of 2003. I last saw Joe in August 2009 at the nursing home. Sadly he did not know who I was.
Time really does fly. Thanks for the memories Joe. Rest in peace!
Fundraiser for Julie McCarthy’s CCSVI treatment
In May, Julie McCarthy (Mike McCarthy’s wife, Dan’s daughter-in-law) will be undergoing CCSVI treatment in California which will hopefully provide relief from the agonizing pain, fatigue and cognitive impairment caused by MS. She is also hoping to regain full vision in her right eye again. The procedure, which is not yet approved in Canada, is a huge financial responsibility. So Julie’s family is hosting a fundraiser to help her have the ‘liberation treatment’.

Dear Jack,
Just read your recall of your time on the farm ,I to hold many fond memories of my childhood there. It brings me to tears all the great times I had there , such a great family maybe not the family that expressed their love that everyone could see but you knew they all cared, my Mom loved the farm so much and that simple but hard way of life made her who she was , and her brothers and sisters whom we treasure with such fond memories W
hat I would do to turn back the hands of time. You were one of the lucky ones with the milking machines Vince and I did this by hand come to think of it maybe we were the lucky ones. I remember one time we had a contest to see who could milk the most cows of the night well guess who won ? I hope all of them are looking down on us with pride knowing that this great family will never be forgotten because I fill my family with all my memories just like my mom did with me, as I am sure you have done with yours.
