Owen McCarthy and Isabel Daly

The parents of Vincent McCarthy were Owen McCarthy (1838-1886) and Isabella Daly (1843-1896) who married in Hastings in 1865, two years before Confederation. Isabella was born in Smith Township, the daughter of James Daly and Mary Hanlon. (It should be noted that there are several spellings in the records-Isabel, Isobel, Isabelle).

The Dalys originally came from Kilonean, County Cork, Ireland, in 1825, and cleared land in Smith Township. James Daly married Mary Hanlon in 1838, after coming to Canada as a boy of 13.

Mary Hanlon came to Canada in 1825 from Bally Hooly, Cork, as a child of 10. She was the first woman to sing in St. Peter’s Cathedral in Peterborough. Her father and brothers were contractors and stonemasons who worked on the cathedral, the Peterborough courthouse, St. John’s Anglican Church, and other stone buildings in Peterborough. She had two sisters who married two Bolands, and a brother, Eugene, who married Mary Kane.

Owen built the present McCarthy house after he married Isabella Daly in 1865. Jim Doris has seen a mortgage signed by Owen dated May 14, 1883 for $1, 750 at six per cent interest until the mortgage was paid off.

Owen was killed in February 1886, aged 47, when hit by a train at Downer’s Corners on the outskirts of Peterborough. He was driving a horse-drawn sleigh, and because he was slightly deaf he did not hear the train approaching. Isabella continued to manage the farm with Tom Doris who was hired to run the farm.

The funeral notice states: The funeral of Owen McCarthy will leave the family residence, Lot No 15, in the fifth concession of the township of Otonabee on Saturday, 27th of February, at 8:00 a.m. and proceed to the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Peterborough. Friends and acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend. February 26th, 1886.

Owen and Isabella had six children

Hi! At the moment, I’m in the midst of an Out of the Cold program (as Director) in Peterborough. We finish the end of March. Because I’m wearing hearing aids now, I prefer to communicate by e-mail.

I’ll try in the summer months to start adding a bit more info to the Daniel McCarthy info. Peggy and Catherine were both nurses. Peggy served in WW2 and then worked at St. Joseph Hospital in Peterborough. Catherine was for several years night nurse for Mr. McClaughlin (spelling) of GM fame in Oshawa until his death.
My brother Donald Michael, an executive of Barclay’s Bank of Canada, died in July of 2009.
Children of Jim and Thressa: Joseph Edward (Ted), Mary Abigail, Gwendolyn Anne, James Claridge, Donald Michael, Pauline Thressa, Margaret Jane Christine, Kathryn Joanne

    More another time!!

    • thanks, Gwen! I’ve updated the site with your comments, and look forward to the rest of your family history. If you’ve got any scanned pictures from your family, it would be great to add them. I’m more than happy to really flesh out your section, as we’ve done with Vince and Jennie’s family.

      take care!
