The Low Family (summer 2001)

Marlyn Kathryn, 1918 -1996, aged 78

Marlyn was a star athlete in basketball and hockey. She was a star softball pitcher, for Keene and for CGE. In one game she struck out 16 of 18 batters she faced. Uncle Joe remembers seeing Marlyn and Donald pitching to each other in the barn as they waited for loads of hay to be brought in from the fields. She graduated from St. Peters and married John David Low (Jack) in April 1943. They moved to Camp Borden in 1954 and spent two years there. The family moved to Montreal in 1956 where Jack was stationed at the Army Forces base at Longue Pointe.

Family members make the following comments about their parents:

“Mom never had a harsh word to say about anyone, she could always see the good. Mom was the most positive person, even in times of extreme turmoil, and we know she had more than her share. Whenever she was a little down she would tell us stories about growing up on the farm and that would brighten her spirits, along with ours.

Mom’s grandchildren were always amazed how much she loved sports and how much she knew about hockey and baseball. In later years when John, Vince and Danny became involved in playing lacrosse she made it her business to find out about this sport as well and very rarely missed a game.

Marlyn and Loretta (summer 1991)

Tanya, Mary’s daughter, remembers a time she was visiting Mom who was watching hockey on TV, had a radio in the kitchen going with one game, and another radio going in the living room with another game.” (I remember Aunt Mary doing exactly the same thing.)

Jack’s family originated in Perth, Scotland. His parents were John David Low and Mary Clark and they had seven children: Charlie, Terry, Harry, Patricia, Gene, Norah and Jack. Jack joined the army at an early age and spent three years overseas. He did some boxing while in the army and after the war he did some training.

John died of cancer on January 13, 1967 at the age of 44. Marlyn died of a heart attack at the age of 78. They had seven children:
