Paul Nelson

Paul Gordon, 1941 (son of Grace and Gordon Nelson)

Paul Nelson spent his spare time in his younger years either at the Keene arena or at Uncle Arnold Nelson’s farm. In the winter he spent many hours playing hockey and helping out at the arena, which was next door to the Nelson’s home. Paul spent many summers working at Nelson’s farm. He started working in the construction business with Fred Nelson and Sons and later worked as manager with Robert Young Construction. In the mid-60s, he and his family moved to Toronto where he worked for Smith Crane Rental for two years. While living in Douro Township, Paul was a volunteer fireman for Douro Township in the 70s.

Paul married Frances Slattery, 1942 in 1962. Frances was instrumental in helping establish the family business. She has worked in the real estate business for many years. They spend many weekends at their summer cottage on Clear Lake where they enjoy spending time with their family and friends. In 1984, Paul and his wife opened a shoe repair business in Peterborough. The repair business is on the same property where Frances grew up and where her parents, Joe and Marjorie, owned and operated a grocery store for many years. The shoe repair business flourished and grew to include Western Boots and Attire. His son, Blair, now operates the shoe repair business while Paul owns and operates the Western Boot Shop.

Paul enjoys golfing and curling. He is a member of the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce and Peterborough Sales and Ads Club. Business conventions for Paul have taken him to interesting places in the USA and he has also vacationed in Ireland, Africa and Hawaii.

Paul and Frances have three children:

  1. Kelly Jean, 1963, lives in Ennismore and has worked at Spectrum Engineering for many years. In 1985 she married Patrick Young Jr.,1961. Patrick (Paddy) works on the family farm and for Doughty Concrete. They have three children:
    • Alysha Frances Yvonne 1990
    • Allison Margaret, 1992
    • Laura Jean, 1993
  2. Kerrie Anne, 1965, lives in Courtice with her husband and family. Kerrie graduated in 1985 from Sir Sandford Fleming College in Early Childhood Education. Following her graduation, she worked in Toronto for five years at St. Lawrence Cooperative and then Durham College after she married Paul Furlani, 1961, in 1990. Paul is a Mechanical Engineer at General Motors in Oshawa. They have three children:
    • Jenna Anne, 1993
    • Adam Paul, 1994
    • Nicole Mary, 1998
  3. Blair Paul lives at R.R.No. 10, Peterborough with his wife and three children. He owns and operates Nelson’s Orthotics and Shoe Repair, recently receiving his certification as a Pedorthist. In 1992 he married Carole Anne Condon, 1967. Carole Anne works in the of Douro Township offices. Blair and Carole have three children:
    • Derek Blair, 1994
    • Kristen Anne, 1996
    • Kyle Paul, 1998
